Grip it and Rip it: Finding the Best Golf Club Grip for Your Swing

As golfers, we know that having the right equipment can make all the difference in your game. While it's essential to have the right clubs, balls, and shoes, many golfers overlook the importance of their grips. The grip is the only point of contact between you and the club, making it essential to have the right one for your game.

With so many golf grips on the the market, it can be challenging to determine the right fit for you and your swing. However, here are a few personal tips that we here at GolfSupply use when selecting grips for our own clubs. Hopefully this you can help you answer a few simple questions about your game and preferences, and set you on the right path towards narrowing down your options for new golf grips.

First, you need to consider how often you play and the conditions you play in. Just like tires on a car, certain golf grips will perform better under different circumstances. For instance, cord grips will offer better traction if your hands are prone to sweating or if you play in a humid climate. If you're looking for an all-season grip, all-rubber Golf Pride grips, like the Golf Pride Tour Velvet, are excellent options.

Determine if you want comfort or control.

If you need a grip that provides maximum comfort due to something like arthritis, choose a soft grip that will make the game as enjoyable as possible. A soft grip will offer more comfort, and choosing the right size will help you grip the club with the right amount of pressure and prevent discomfort. On the other hand, if you're looking for maximum control, a firm grip that has less torque will provide more feedback and give you the control you want.

Decide if you want help gripping more consistently.

Everyone wants to be more consistent shot after shot. Grips that help with alignment can be divided into three categories: no alignment (360-style grip) usually found on adjustable clubs off the rack, textured grips with visual aids, and grips with a raised section to provide visual and texture feedback to get your hands in the right position. For instance, the Calibrate grips from Lamkin and the Align series from Golf Pride feature a raised portion on the bottom of the grip to help you grip into the same spot in your hands shot after shot.

Consider the size and shape that is best for you.

Comfort is crucial when finding the correct size grip. You should select the size that is going to make you the most comfortable, regardless of your hand size. You can find in-between sizes by changing up the number of wraps of tape between the shaft and the grip before installation to make it bigger or by stretching the grip on the shaft during installation to make it slightly smaller. However, using extra layers of tape and stretching the grip slightly reduces the wall thickness of the grip, which can negatively impact the life of the grip. If you’re unsure what you need, it’s always worth a trip to you local shop or golf pro and they can help get your golf grips setup tailored to you. Or, if you’d like to learn how to regrip a golf club yourself, we wrote a easy how-to guide to walk you through the steps.

Select a grip shape that fits best with your swing.

Grip shapes can be divided into three categories: standard taper, reduced taper, and zero-taper. A standard taper grip will feel smaller in the bottom hand and can potentially encourage a faster club face rotation into impact. A reduced taper grip still tapers, but at a much slower rate into the bottom of the grip. This can be helpful to players who want to feel more of a connection with the club on the bottom hand. Zero-taper grips offer extreme comfort to both the top and bottom hand and are often found in some of the softest designs to reduce grip pressure and unwanted vibration for improved comfort.
